Don't Reward Illegal Aliens -- REWARD Them

It apparently is open season on illegal immigrants at the Arizona Legislature.

About a dozen bills are being considered this year that clearly are aimed at making their lives as miserable as possible.
So whined Anne Denogean in the Tucson Citizen on Tuesday. Read her list of complaints about proposed legislation here.

A few of the common sense proposed legislation items are...

• Stop illegal immigrants from receiving state-funded adult education, including English and GED classes, or job training.
• Deny county resident status, regardless of whether they meet the other requirements for domicile, to illegal immigrant students for the purpose of paying in-state tuition rates.
• Specify that a person seeking to be a home child-care provider be a citizen or legal resident.
• Specify that certain Department of Economic Security family assistance programs, including those that promote child welfare and safe and stable families, are off-limits to illegal immigrants.
• Allow local peace officers to question anybody about his immigration status if the officer thinks he has committed, is committing or is about to commit a crime.
I, for one, am A-OK with all of the above, and everything on Anne's list, as a matter of fact. Because as Arizona State Rep. Russell Pearce points out on his website, ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL.

And, apparently, that means less than human. They have no right to be here and, thus, no rights at all.

It's true that people who come here illegally shouldn't be rewarded for it.
But, Anne, don't you see that providing state-funded ESL classes, in-state college tuition, taxpayer-funded assistance, etc. for ILLEGAL aliens IS rewarding them? You say that ILLEGAL aliens shouldn't be rewarded for breaking the law until you're blue in the face, but then you criticize legislation to deny those rewards, and make ridiculous comparisons like this one:

So, do we deal with these "criminals" as though they were mass murderers, or with the compassion we would show the man who steals a loaf of bread to feed his family?
Since when is the punishment for mass murderers to deny them free ESL classes and to have the audacity to question their immigration status?

Then Anne gives us an inane quote from Gerald F. Kicanas of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson.

"In the meantime, state legislatures have a responsibility, certainly, to protect citizens and to address issues like drug trafficking. But legislation that is simply harsh and creates a sense of meanspiritedness in the community is not helpful legislation."
A sense of meanspiritedness? The last time I checked, the government isn't charged with being nice. The government is supposed to create and enforce laws that protect its citizenry. HELLO! Citizens to government, come in government.

It's up to our lawmakers to confront the issue of illegal immigration with realistic and compassionate solutions that honor our tradition as a nation of immigrants - not with cracks of the whip to drive them from our door.
Anne has done such a great job of blurring the line between immigration and ILLEGAL immigration...why quit while she's ahead? If you really want to show compassion to immigrants, how about not allowing people to flood the country ILLEGALLY, threatening the very way of life that so many legal immigrants have toiled, sacrificed, waited in line, fought and died for?

Now THAT'S what I call compassion.
