Bin Laden's Message

But to Muslim ears - and here is the problem - the same words sound very different. Bin Laden spoke in terms steeped in Islamic tradition. The truce that he offered, for example, recalls great past leaders, including the prophet Mohammed, who offered one in his battle with the Quraysh tribe that he eventually defeated. Bin Laden's aim was to give himself the stature of a leader - specifically the leader who can realize the Muslim dream of establishing a caliphate, or worldwide Muslim superstate. And though it might seem ludicrous for a man on the run to pit himself against the most powerful nation in history, for many Muslims it isn't.

I think this is absolutely true!

What we're really fighting are the adolescent fantasies of a beaten group. Not beaten by outside forces, but beaten from within, by an ideology that leads like night into day to dictators and fascism every single time.

And how do you fight that exactly?
