Jim Gilchrist: A Winner In My Book
The results are in and Jim Gilchrist lost the election. While I'm disappointed one salient fact from this news story leapt off the page.
Third-party candidate Jim Gilchrist, a founder of the Minuteman Project border patrol group who made illegal immigration the centerpiece of his campaign, was third with 23,237 votes, or nearly 25 percent. That's huge! A third party candidate, even in the particularly nutty spots in sunny California, usually draws single digits. Twenty five percent, Wow! This will have an impact on upcoming elections and I will be curious to see what new phrase the republicans will cook up to sell Amnesty (temporary worker, guest worker, ill-used slave).
Don't worry, they'll think of something.
In related news, President Bush doesn't get it--
"The American people should not have to choose between a welcoming society and a lawful society," Bush said in Tucson, Arizona. "We can have both at the same time."Listen up sir, I think I speak for a vast number of Americans when I say: Illegals aren't welcome. I will not welcome one single person who broke our laws to come to this country. These folks need to shag thier ass back home and get in line. That's the way it works.
Congress hears the message, but will they act--
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The powerful chairman of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee put forward a tough bill on Tuesday designed to curb illegal immigration, punish those who employ illegal aliens and give the government more powers to detain and deport them.
The balance quote provides a light moment--
"This is a half-hearted and half-baked solution to the problem of illegal immigration," said Angela Kelley of the National Immigration Forum, a pro-immigrant group.Actually, Angela, it sounds pretty stout-hearted and fully baked to me. But thanks for playing, we have some lovely door prizes -- don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
