Weighing In On ID

This post was inspired by this.

With all the hullabaloo over intelligent design and theory of evolution I'd like to share something I've thought for a long time.

Okay, no matter where you fall on the issue the crux is whether or not we should be teaching what amounts to faith in our public schools.

It is presumed that the theory of evolution is science, hence superior to intelligent design, but why is the theory of evolution considered science?

Science is by definition observable, recreatable and then ultimately peer reviewed. Evolution is none of of those things. It can't be, hence the moniker...Theory!

Until a monkey strolls out of the forest dressed to the nines and grasping a credit card in his furry little mitt I'll feel quite confident in this assertion.

Luckily, "real" science was nice enough to provide us with two very viable alternatives. Adaptation and mutation, I tend to think everything we think of as evolution can be traced back to two culprits.

Adaptation and mutation are of course diametrically opposed. Adaptation is the creative expression of God, Nature or the great pumpkin. I think it's God but that's neither here nor there for this conversation.

Mutation is the dark side. there are no beneficial mutations that I'm aware of. Cancer is of course a mutation as are many of the childhood syndromes. Mutations tend to be killers.

So why adaptation instead of evolution? Well, I am a big strapping Chicago boy, I am thick through the chest. Is it because I eat a lot of delicious pizza? Yes! but that's not all, my body is adapted to cold weather. My heart and internal organs are kept safe from the punishing cold by extra layers of flesh.

In the exact same way you will find people from warm environments tend to be tall and thin, why? because that build is more efficient for dealing with the heat.

When you consider the manifold races of the earth it is plain to see that we are able to adapt our bodies in the best way to overcome our environent.

Is this evolution? I say no, evolution seems to be predicated on the idea of species becoming something else, or lines of transmission. You've all seen the charts that show the chains of evolution, yes?

Well, the bad news for the theory of evolution is that there is scanty at best proof that those charts have any relationship to reality. Sorry!

However, we can see the truth of adaptation and mutation all around us. The thing we don't see in this rich pageant is evolution.

There's a joke making the rounds right now, goes like this...why is it UFO sightings have dropped to almost nil since the invention of the camcorder?

Evolution, to me, is just like that. Or to put it more plainly, evolution is faith. Faith in a theory that no one can prove, faith in other people. All of which is fine but, it's not science.

So why are the scientists stuck on the theory of evolution? Excellent question!

One scientist can be creative. Gather more than two together and you suddenly have an argument. Three and you have a heretic. The theory of evolution is orthodoxy, you might recall a fellow named Galileo?

Much like that eternal second right before the Big Bang, consciousness in humans poses a problem for proponents of evolution. No one really knows what happened. One theory I've read suggested that a troop of monkeys was struck by lightning.

If that's what you choose to believe fine. Not my place to judge, but I have to ask you, is it really any sillier to posit a loving God?

Merry Christmas!
