Narnia & The Deconstructors

What is a fairy tale?

What purpose does it serve?

Mj & I went to see Narnia and really enjoyed it, blown away in fact.

Why?

Because it's an amazing tale, an amazing fairy tale.

Having waited a couple of weeks it was interesting to see it having read quite a bit of other people's take on this film and story. And quite a few people fell into the bah humbug category, it was dopey, it was hokey, the lion came back to life!

They just don't get it.

This wasn't a gritty urban drama with cops and crime scene techs solving a crime while a smooth sax wails in the distance.

No, it's a fairy tale.

What is a fairy tale?

Fairy tales speak to our soul. They are larger than life morality tales that impart timeless truths about right and wrong, war and peace, how to live our lives. The reason you feel a thrill run down your spine when Aslan comes back is because good does triumph eventually, but there must be suffering to achieve it, this is what gives the struggle it's inherent nobility.

And that was the other thing the naysayers just don't get.

Nobility. I read several folks who were upset by the whole idea of a king or queen. They lack a historical perspective on what classic nobility represents. In real life the nobility, kings and queens never really worked all that well. The reason for it's failure is the same as the churches, frail human beings.

Frail human beings tend to screw things up, we're imperfect, impatient, unforgiving.

true nobility is always about responsibility and sacrifice, never about privilege. True nobility doesn't exist on this world, it can't, we're too imperfect, we just see glimpses now and again. When a soldier gives his life for his mates, a parent sacrifices their dream for their child's, a cop dies in the line of duty.

Nobility isn't about kings and queens or royalty, true nobility is about expressing the eternal through our imperfect selves. Trusting in the deep magic, believing that responsibility and sacrifice pay a dividend beyond earthly riches.

And that the greatest of these is love.
