Mexitude, Waukegan Style

Source: Chicago Tribune

A Mexican Independence Day parade scheduled for Saturday has drawn fierce criticism in Waukegan, where some residents accuse the high school principal who sponsored the event of favoring Hispanic students.

Principal Edward Guerra offered extra credit to any student who participates in the parade, but opponents called it a waste of taxpayer money and questioned if he will hold similar events for holidays celebrated by other cultures.
If you're not familiar with Mexitude, read the post that started it all here.

I'm sure that those who think this is a dandy idea would be quick to label me a racist for not being comfortable, as an American in America, with an American school singling out the holiday of a foreign nation and giving extra credit to students for celebrating it.

They would be wrong, and so is this. But I'm not alone in thinking or saying it...

WKRS-AM 1220 radio host and producer Libby Collins said she fielded 20 to 30 calls within an hour early Thursday. Most callers were opposed to the parade, she said.
More Americans, I'm guessing.

Huh. I guess there are still a few left in Waukegan, after all.
