Chicago Out-Celebrates Mexico on Mexican Independence

Source: Bloomberg (H/T Immigration Watchdog)

Mexican President Vicente Fox canceled plans to kick off Independence Day celebrations in Mexico City tomorrow to avoid potentially violent clashes with election protesters.

Fox will instead hold an Independence Day ceremony tomorrow in Guanajuato state, where Mexico's movement to separate from Spain began, Interior Minister Carlos Abascal said at a press conference in the capital. Fox's decision follows an agreement passed by Mexico's Senate today asking him to relocate the celebration.
But have no fear. You can still get plenty of Mexican Independence celebration for your peso buck right here in Chicago. We've got multiple parades plus Chicago's famous skyline lit up in red, white and green, courtesy of Illinois' own Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn. Because here in Chicago, Mexitude 'R' Us.

But there bigger worries in Mexico right now than celebrating independence from Spain...

The cancellation marks the second time this month protesters loyal to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador have forced Fox to abandon an official celebration. The disruptions orchestrated so far by Lopez Obrador, who finished second in Mexico's July 2 presidential election, raise concern that President-elect Felipe Calderon may be hamstrung in his efforts to govern after he takes office Dec. 1.
Imagine Bush's State of the Union address or July 4th celebration being "disrupted" by John Kerry after he "finished second" (a kind euphemism for LOST) in our last presidential election, and you'll see why what's going on in Mexico is so worrisome. There is a civil war brewing directly to our south, and with a border that's about as tight as a 75-year-old woman's jawline -- outside of Beverly Hills, of course -- that spells T-R-O-U-B-L-E for those of us north of the alleged border, too.

Hold onto your butts, folks...it could be a bumpy ride. But who am I to complain? At least here in Chicago the ride will probably include mariachi music and margaritas courtesy of, well, We the Taxpayers.
