The Diplomacy Myth
I recently attended a Town Hall meeting featuring Jim Oberweis. Afterwards, as we stood around and chatted I had the opportunity to chat with another gentleman who'd attended.
He was also a writer, a good one, and we shared a background in hospitality so we shared some war stories.
Later on we were talking about radical Islam and I was struck by how different our perspectives were on the subject.
During the course of our conversation he mentioned that he thought someone in the administration had made it known in the middle east that we were prepared to nuke mecca should they misbehave again. In his mind these were reasonable folks you could strike a bargain with. I think he considers them Americans who just happen to wear the man-dress.
In my mind I was picturing scenes of people having thier heads sawed off with dull knives, stories I've read of girls being gang raped in the Muslim quarter of France for not having the right headscarf or some such thing. suicide bombers, planes full of innocent people flying into buildings. Three little girls with thier heads chopped off. That weaselly little doofus who runs Iran assuring us he planned to eliminate Israel, then us.
In other words a culture that was bugnuts crazy and not getting better any time soon.
How could two reasonably intelligent people see the situation so differently?
Who's right?
I don't claim to be smart enough to answer that question fully, but I do have some ideas. I think he was projecting his own approach, his own equinamity on our enemies, who have in no uncertain terms shown they have very little interest in reason or discourse.
I wonder if he can truly imagine a society in which people aren't trained to think for themselves at all. Where the indoctrination begins at birth and each individual is simply a cog in the jihad machine. A society on the downslope of history flailing out at it's imagined enemies. A society that must change or find itself extinguished on the ash heap of history.
I don't think so. I think he wants everybody in the world to be reasonable like him. But what happens when thier not?
The myth of diplomacy is that all situations can be resolved with talk-talk. But they can't. can they? The left in this country wants everybody in the world to grab a grande frappacino and chill at a starbucks and just let it all hang out. Smoke a little chiba and get mellow, then have a heavy skull session to work it all out.
Unfortunately for our lunatic friends on the left the world doesn't work that way, but fortunately there are still those who are willing to protect them in thier little bubbly-peace world.
