Dumbass Statements and the Dumbass Politicians Who Make Them

Reading the FAIR update on today's Senate Judiciary Committee discussion of the amnesty/guest worker bill introduced by Chairman Arlen Specter, I found this little nugget...

Sen. Durbin (D-IL) again raised an amendment offered last week to delete the provision in the Chairman's bill that criminalizes illegal presence in the U.S. He argued that people should be punished for conduct rather than status.
People should be punished for conduct rather than status? For once, I agree with ya, Dick!

How about starting with conduct like, oh, I don't know...entering the country ILLEGALLY, overstaying a visa ILLEGALLY, working ILLEGALLY?

As a constituent from Illinois and a concerned citizen, I'd be pleased as punch if you'd actually vote for punishing that kind of criminal conduct. Unfortunately, I'm afraid you're too concerned about your political status to exhibit conduct with that kind of common sense and backbone.
