"They say we are criminals. We are not criminals," said Salvador Hernandez, 43, of Los Angeles, a resident alien who came to the United States illegally from
El Salvador 14 years ago and worked as truck driver, painter and day laborer.
"This bill is wrong because this is a country for everybody who wants to live a better life and this is a free world," said protester Lionel Vanegas, who owns an accounting firm.
"As we debate the immigration issue, we must remember there are hardworking individuals, doing jobs that Americans will not do, who are contributing to the economic vitality of our country," Bush said.
He emphasized that the temporary worker program he's proposed would not provide amnesty to illegal immigrants in the United States. "For the sake of justice and for the sake of border security, I firmly oppose amnesty," Bush said.
"Let them be comfortable here while they're working and doing our work that nobody else will do," he said of immigrant workers.
The president's message was echoed in Denver, where one Colorado farmer told CBS affiliate KCNC-TV, "Let them come here legal, quit chasing them."
