Warrant out after mom a no-show at beating trial

COOK COUNTY -- A Prospect Heights woman charged with beating a child may have fled to her native Mexico rather than stand trial, authorities said Monday.

Araceli Medina, 29, of the 500 block of Piper Lane, was arrested in January 2006 and charged with aggravated battery of a child. She did not appear for trial Monday in the Rolling Meadows branch of Cook County Circuit Court. Judge Thomas Fecarotta Jr. issued a warrant for Medina's arrest.

Medina, a Mexican citizen, was baby-sitting for a friend's child when she began hitting him in the head to make him stop crying, authorities said.

Assistant State's Atty. Marilyn Hite-Ross said authorities initially did not think the baby was going to survive the beating. The child has serious brain damage, she said.
