Bush Tap Dances Around Illegal Immigration

I just forced myself to sit through Bush's speech in Arizona yesterday about border control and illegal immigration. I knew I needed to. I knew it would be difficult. I knew it would be painful. Catch it again over at The Political Teen, if you can stomach it.

Bush just keeps saying the same things over and over and over again.

"Securing our border is essential."

"I have a solemn duty, and so do the member of the United States Congress, to protect our nation, our constitution, and our laws."

"We will enforce the laws of our country."
I hear you. Unfortunately, hearing only means you're talking. Again. I whole-heartedly agree that securing our border is essential, and that you & Congress share a solemn duty to protect our nation, our constitution, and our laws. So when are you going to quit yapping about it and JUST DO IT?

You've been in office for nearly 5 years. Four years have passed since 9-11. Illegals flow over the borders by the millions annually, taking jobs and services that should be reserved for citizens and those who follow the law for a shot at the American Dream. God only knows how many extremists have made it into the country and/or managed to stay illegally -- people who would love nothing better than to make a devastating testament to their hatred of this country in the form of another attack on the soil of our homeland.

And you say, "We will enforce the laws of our country?"

We're waiting.

And don't even get me started on the temporary worker program.

Bush talks about bringing people out of the shadows. Well, I'm all for bringing illegals out of the shadows...but only so we can get them and keep them the hell out of the country!

He talks about rejecting amnesty. From the humongous, dusty old Webster dictionary in the conference room where I work:

AMNESTY
The voluntary overlooking of an offense by the one offended.
The act of an authority (as a government) by which general pardon of an offense is granted, often before trial or conviction.

How in the world is giving permission to stay and continue working to someone who is already doing so illegally NOT amnesty?

I am so very ready to see actual border control. I am ready to see enforcement of our immigration laws, including the deportation of people who have been allowed to get away with their criminal activity for far too long. I am ready for employers who hire illegals to be levied with severe fines. I am ready for some serious evidence that the president means what he says about the government carrying out its duty to protect our nation, our constitution and our laws. I am ready for some action.

Most Americans are ready, Mr. Bush. More than ready, really.
