Dunkin' Donuts owner pleads guilty to recruiting illegal aliens

Jose Calhelha and his 23-year old daughter Diana walked into New Haven Federal Court and pleaded guilty to charges resulting from our Team 8 investigation. The charges may land Jose Calhelha in federal prison for more than a year when he's sentenced. "We're looking ... to convince this judge to give the most lenient sentence possible," defense attorney William Dow said. In May 2005, News Channel 8 reported Calhelha was recruiting workers in Portugal with an advertisement and bringing them to Connecticut to work at his ten Dunkin' Donuts stores. "I work 7 days a week maybe 85-hours a week. No day off," one worker told News Channel 8 at that time. The News Channel 8 investigation resulted in a federal indictment.
