Democrats Demand Bush Deliver Republican Votes on ImmigrationIf this is what Americans really want, why would it be so 'politically sensitive?'
Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) — Democrats are demanding President George W. Bush deliver significant support — likely more than a quarter of all House Republicans — to ensure passage of a bipartisan overhaul of U.S. immigration law.
Democrats say they won’t shoulder the responsibility alone for any comprehensive and politically sensitive plan that includes Bush’s proposals to give 12 million illegal aliens a chance at citizenship and to create a guest-worker program. The president made his latest pitch for the plan in his State of the Union address this week.
In fact what the Dems know, and you should too, is that passage of a 'comprehensive immigration reform' bill would be poison to their reelection chances, hence they want Republicans to sign the exact same suicide note and join them on the gallows. This way there is no obvious party to be blamed.
If the (R)'s weren't the stupid party this would be the perfect opportunity for them to regain the approval of quite a few disaffected American voters of both parties.
As John Hawkins reminds us...
So while candidates on both sides of the race aired commercials talking about how they were the real choice for people who were serious about stopping illegal immigration, almost nobody ran any advertisements promising to allow illegals to become citizens or promoting amnesty. That tells you a lot about how popular comprehensive illegal immigration reform is when you get right down to it.What the (D)'s require right now is cover, the best and smartest thing the (R)'s could do is deny them that.
