GOP Wimps Out -- AGAIN

Just read this.
The two top Republicans in Congress, confronted with internal party divisions as well as large public demonstrations, said Tuesday they intend to pass immigration legislation that does not subject illegal immigrants to prosecution as felons.

A written statement by House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, did not say whether they would seek legislation subjecting illegal immigrants to misdemeanor prosecution or possibly a civil penalty such as a fine.
Does anyone else out there have a sinking feeling in the pit of their stomach? Day after day I read reports detailing how our politicians have managed to find/make yet another opportunity to reveal their spinelessness and utter contempt for the people who put them in office. I probably shouldn't get this upset over felony vs. misdemeanor vs. civil -- what difference does it really make if it isn't enforced, anyway? And we certainly haven't seen one shred of evidence that our government has the will to enforce any law when it comes to the invasion of illegal aliens into our country.
"It remains our intent to produce a strong border security bill that will not make unlawful presence in the United States a felony," the two men said. An estimated 11 million men, women and children are in the United States illegally.
That's really the whole point, isn't it, fellas? You intend to "produce a strong border security bill." We already have legislation in place that provides for a legal way to live and work in America. You can debate, write, and pass legislation until you're blue in the face -- what the hell is the point if you don't have the will (or desire) to enforce it?
The late-afternoon statement by the top GOP leaders in both houses came after days of large street demonstrations by protesters opposed to criminal penalties for illegal immigrants.
Of course they're marching in the streets! They've been getting away with living and working in our country illegally -- with tax-payer funded education and medical care to boot -- for years! Even a whisper that it might be taken away would be enough to drive them to the streets to protest an end to what they seem to think is their right.

But now they're emboldened by the response of politicians (like my own Senator Durbin and Congressman Gutierrez in Chicago this past Monday) who are listening to their message, encouraging them to keep taking to the streets to make demands of the American people, and telling them that if they keep it up they'll get what they want!

Of course, these traitorous politicians, who would give our nation away to the invading aliens with no respect for this country or its laws, are quick to say it isn't about politics. On Monday night, however, they were also quick to vilify Republicans, as if there aren't plenty of Republican sellouts pushing for amnesty too. And then there's this:
The question of a penalty has dogged the debate for months and been the subject of intense political maneuvering.

GOP aides pointed out that Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the
House Judiciary Committee, had tried during debate on the House floor to reduce the penalty to a misdemeanor.

The attempt failed on a vote of 257-164, with 65 Republicans and 191 Democrats opposed. Many of the Democrats, including members of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus, indicated at the time they favored no criminal penalties, and opposed the suggested change.
You see, politicians (from both sides of the aisle) who favor rewarding those whose first gesture of respect for this county was to break our laws wanted to make sure they had something to vilify. Something to shout about. Something about which to wave their fists indignantly while they twist, misrepresent, and lie.

So when the author of 4437 tried to soften the penalty of his own bill, they voted NO.

Politics in action, by those who would listen to marching illegal aliens over their own citizen constituents.

Does anyone out there see a way that this ISN'T going to end in violence?
