Other studies, including one by the Congressional Budget Office, have concluded that illegal immigrants who gained citizenship would spur economic activity and increase tax collections, pushing federal revenues up $75 billion over 10 years.

Time and time again I hear the open borders crowd cite figures like this. $75 billion over 10 years sounds pretty good. It's also, however, only half of the equation.

Robert Rector, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, said passage of the Senate bill would cost taxpayers at least $16 billion a year.

Crunching the numbers on my trusty abacus, here's what I come up with:

$160 billion ($16 billion cost per year for ten years)
MINUS
$75 billion (increased federal revenue)
EQUALS
The American people screwed to the tune of $85 billion
